     Experience the extraordinary bravery and resilience of the 370^th Infantry Regiment, an all-African American Unit known as the “Black Devils,” who fought valiantly during World War I.  Commanded by African American officers, and serving with distinction under the French Army, they overcame prejudice and adversity to achieve remarkable feats on the battlefield.

     In this inspiring historical fiction story, Doctor Claudius Ballard, a successful Los Angeles physician, and a real-life heroic figure, volunteers to serve as a doctor for the 370^th Infantry Regiment.  The story begins in April 1918 as the men of the 370^th arrive in France.  The story is seen through the eyes of Corporal Frederick Uyless Veal.   

     Throughout the intensive training period, Frederick develops an unexpected friendship with a hardened French soldier, who volunteers to be part of their medical team.  These two men become Doctor Ballard’s trusted medical assistants at the front lines.  Meanwhile, Doctor Ballard and the other volunteer doctors of the 370^th garner the trust and respect of French officers and French soldiers.

     During one ferocious charge the 370^th earns their nickname, “The Black Devils, “ from fleeing German soldiers. US and French soldiers form close relationships and develop mutual respect. From their first to the last battle, many in the regiment, including Doctor Ballard, are decorated for bravery.
